About Punta Gorda

Come Visit our beautiful town on the southwest Florida coast.  Punta Gorda has been described as a great combination of small town feeling with a little city flare. An hour south of Sarasota and 45 minutes north of Ft. Myers, Punta Gorda is at a great location between major cities but with less traffic and hustle and bustle with which to contend. Come visit us!  Punta Gorda is a great place to live, work and play. Click on the video below and you will see what we mean.....

Punta Gorda is located on the southern edge of Charlotte Harbor at the mouth of the Peace River.  If one were to view a map of Florida, we are due west from the southern tip of Lake Okeechobee(the large body of water in the southern portion of the state), thus we are officially in the sub-tropics of Florida.

Punta Gorda is a thriving community with a great downtown accommodating to walking traffic. If you were considering a move here, there would be a variety of neighborhoods from which to choose.

After Hurricane Charley that occurred in August of 2004, Punta Gorda was able to benefit as new buildings rose from the ground, new parks were developed, brand new schools were erected.....Punta Gorda is now better than ever!

A great place to live as well as vacation, visitors take in the great fishing and enjoy the boating community that borders the downtown area.  Punta Gorda and it's surrounding communities offer canal properties with access to the Gulf of Mexico.  The views from the waterfront looking across the harbor are incredible especially the end of the day taking in our beautiful sunsets. The views are truly spectacular!

HISTORY

Punta Gorda's history traces all the way to the early 1500's back to the early explorations of Ponce de Leon and Hernando DeSoto. Punta Gorda's name means "fat point" in Spanish and describes it shape and position protruding into the harbor.  Originally inhabited by the Calusa Indians the area was not settled until the 1700's as the English began to migrate to the Charlotte Harbor area.

Punta Gorda was mainly a sleepy fishing town until the late 1800's when Isaac Trabue, a unionist Kentucky lawyer, purchased hundreds of acres of land in anticipation of the expansion of the Florida Southern Railway. The arrival of the railway expedited the growth of Punta Gorda and contributed to how it has evolved over the years.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Many of Punta Gorda's structures have withstood the test of time.  Many 19th century homes are still scattered throughout the downtown area.  Yearly, The Historical Society and The Garden Club hold tours, sharing these historical homes with the community giving all a chance to step back in time.  Many of Punta Gorda's local residents are primary sources of its rich history. The Historical Society is very active and maintain 4 of Punta Gorda's structures including The History Park, an evolving park located on the outskirts of downtown.

As part of the revitalization of Punta Gorda's Downtown, Punta Gorda is reaping the benefits of oganizations Team Punta Gorda, a group of private citizens working together with the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce and another organization Florida Main Street which is part of the State Historic Preservation Office.  Together all three organizations look to the future and have had an incredible impact on this town's present beauty and growing commerce.
